Advancement in Computer Technology


5 years ago we gathered around and marveled at the little specs moving at our commands, doing not much – except moving off course, we called these things games. Today the hardware in computers and other devices has changed significantly; we went from having a “spacious” 1mb hard drive to 250 GB of space. The graphics have also taken a giant leap for our computers, no longer are we confined to little dots but our 256mb graphic cards allow us to explore a virtual world in 3d. The sound has also changed from 4bit to 32 and pretty soon 64bit; we went from beeps to actually words. Finally the speed of our beloved computers has also increased from mere kilobytes to gigabytes of rams.

In such a short period of time we went from what we used to call “advanced” technology to today’s much superior devices. So if you guys are like I am, there is one question that strikes our mind, what’s next? Well I would love to say that we will be able to put on our virtual glasses that will allow us to explore the virtual world as if we were in it, but this is not likely, sorry guys; however, these sorts of glasses are being constructed but its unlikely they will come out any time soon. What we can expect to see is an improvement in our Text-to-speech and vise versa programs after the 64bit sound card is released allowing the computer to understand our voices much clearly, also we should soon be seeing more “dept” in our computer as you may know that the most our computers can run on 32bit resolution, it is expected that Microsoft is like to bring out a 64bit resolution with there next version of windows. Also the speed and graphics are to increase a lot more, already some games look as they are almost real, and soon they will look real.

I am not certain exactly what marvel the computer hardware’s will hold in the future, but one thing is certain it will be something to forward too, and once again the next generation will be mocking the so called advanced technology we have today.


Discovering Your Local Area Network


In the late 1960’s as large college universities and several research labs gained an ever increasing amount of computers, the need for interconnections that worked at high-speed was great, and the pressure was on. It was not until the mid 1970’s that an answer to the demand was created, they called it LAN.

LAN stands for Local-Area Network, with the ability to cover small areas, such as a home or office or group of buildings (schools, warehouse, etc.), LANs have higher data-transfer rates, smaller range and do not require licensed telecommunication lines as opposed to WAN (Wide-Area Network). ARCNET and Token Ring were two LANs that were widely used in the past. Ethernet and Wi-Fi are two of today’s most common LANs.

A LAN is an important component to gamers. By setting up a LAN, gamers can link together their computers and play with or against their friends. Games, such as “Diablo II” and “S.O.C.O.M.”, allows gamers to cooperate together in a team while either on line or while their computers are connected by LAN.Games, such as “Unreal Tournament” and “Starcraft”, allow gamers connected by the internet or a LAN to work as a team or to compete against each other.computers are usually linked by what is known as a Cat-5 cable to a HUB; and the HUB acts like a mediator. The Cat-5 cable connects to the back of the computer through the Ethernet port on the Network card, network adapter, LAN adapter or NIC (Network Interface Card). A network card operates on both the physical layer and the data link layer; it allows a low-level addressing system, using Mac Addresses, also known as an IP address, and physical access to the networking medium (the HUB). Not all LANs are the same; some use cables while others are wireless.

While other network technology exists, since the mid 1990’s, the Ethernet network card has been leading the crowd, due to low cost and easy integration and use. A unique 48-bit serial number is on every Ethernet network card, stored in the ROM; the serial number is your computers Mac address. The Mac address for every computer must be unique; otherwise only one computer with a given Mac address could be on line and connected to the LAN at a time. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is responsible for each unique Mac address getting assigned to vendors of interface controllers; this is so no two network cards share the same Mac address.

At one point network cards were expansion cards that had to be plugged into the motherboard. Most new computers have the network card built into the motherboard; some may even have two ports built in so the computer can be connected to multiple networks. Some companies have started using optical fiber instead of Cat-5 cables or USB cords, because optical fiber is immune to electromagnetic interference. Optical fibers are made of glass or plastic, instead of metal, and carry light along their full length. The electrical signals sent along the optical fiber degrade less during transfer than signals sent along metal wires (Cat-5 cables and USB cords).


How To Determine How Much Bandwidth Your Business Needs For Your Computer Network Infrastructure


Could I suggest a path which is easier to say than to do? The first step is an inventory of what you have, the second step is a measure of the QoS you are getting in real terms… and if you can do one and two then three should be to figure out what you really need to improve or eliminate.

I have noticed that throwing bandwidth at problems is a very typical NA approach whereas in Europe bandwidth has always been more expensive so enterprises have tended to be more efficient.

The other piece of the puzzle that has to be consider also is the use of WAN acceleration equipment at each branch office. For your private WAN infrastructure (VPN, MPLS or other), most companies are either evaluating, deploying or have already deployed WAN accelerator appliances. These appliances are really changing the IT landscape so they are a necessary technology for most IT environments these days.

So without getting off topic. In our experience, “most” businesses leveraging WAN acceleration technology with branch offices that have less than 60 users can get away with only installing a T1 private WAN connection. Even with VoIP and other big apps being pushed out to the edge. Most host locations or disaster recovery locations will usually require NxT1 or partial to full T3 connections.

Please understand that there are a ton of variables here that relate to:

-types of users



-replication etc.

To break it down just follow this checklist:

1 – Baseline your network so you know what is applications are running on it and how much bandwidth each is using.

2 – Identify critical applications and determine the bandwidth need for adequate performance for each.

3 – Identify the “trash” applications such as “Weather Bug”, internet radio, etc. which can be limited to little or no bandwidth.

4 – Filter your outgoing as well as your incoming traffic on all firewalls.

5 – Write ACLs for your routers or L3 MDFs and which log violations to you management console and analyze the results.

6 – Instigate QoS

7 – Build a Lab that represents the hardware and software infrastructure of you LAN/CAN/MAN/WAN/WLAN and test new applications to verify how they will effect you current bandwidth configuration.

8 – Be proactive as you monitor the bandwidth use and it is growing at a more or less constant rate recommend and add additional bandwidth before you create a bottle neck.

The concept of cloud computing is simple. Data is transferred to and from remote, independently managed servers through internet connections. Internet Protocols: How does the Internet Work


The Internet comprises a plurality of individual computers, each of which are connected to one network. Access protocol, however, apply to this connection. Internet protocols are essentially rules that facilitate communication between individual machines (computers) and the Internet. Applications, such as web browsers and search engines, use Internet access protocols to search for and download the information. But no one piece of software has access to every file, which is located on the Internet; thus, it is necessary to build an arsenal of web sites, subject directories, search engines, and Usenet and email groups to research needs.

Some of the more traditional protocols are HTTP (“The Web”), TELNET, FTP, Usenet, and email.

1. The World Wide Web

The World Wide Web (WWW) is oftentimes confused with “The Internet.” This is understandable, since the WWW represents a large portion of what is available on the Internet. However, the WWW is only one of many protocols Internet access.

Access protocol that forms the basis for the WWW is the HyperText Transfer Protocol, or HTTP. HTTP is a distinct protocol that also offers access to other protocols, such as telnet, ftp, and Usenet and email groups. This is one reason for its popularity – users can search and retrieve information from various protocols without having to learn and connect with each one. The Web is also adept at handling multimedia files and advanced programming language, and is relatively simple, boasting an easy-to-use interface. When conducting online research, you will probably turn to the WWW 99% of the time.

Internet Access Protocol The Web is called HTTP because the WWW uses hypertext to retrieve information. Hypertext is a way to link documents together of words (or graphics) called links. Each time a user clicks on the link, he is directed to another document, one specified by the author’s link. When you visit a website, you use hyperlinks to navigate from page to page within the site. Most sites contain links to other websites as well.

To browse the web, you need to use a piece of software called a web browser. Many browsers employ plug-ins so that they can show multimedia content such as pictures or audio / video files. Even if you are not sure what a web browser is, chances are you’ve used a few. Most popular browsers are Internet Explorer and Mozilla.

2. Telnet

Another Internet Access Protocol you might encounter is the TELNET protocol. Machines that are connected to the Internet sometimes use this program to enable other computers to connect to databases, catalogs and chat services. For example, I often made use of Telnet when taking online distance learning from the University of New Mexico a few years ago. 4. Usenet and email discussion groups

Usenet is a system that uses Network News Transfer Protocol, or NNTP. Usenet groups, commonly referred to as forums, discussion groups are devoted to a specific topic. With thousands of forums available, each item of environmental protection Taco Bell is covered.

Email groups are another form of discussion. Instead of NNTP, they use email protocol called Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, or SMTP. As forums, email groups are also around certain subjects. How to declutter Your Computer


Did you notice that your computer’s performance had deteriorated over a period of time since you bought? The reason is that your computer has been cluttered with unnecessary files that you’ll never use. Cleaning up your computer on a regular basis and defragmenting a scheduled basis will increase the rate to a considerable extend, if not fully.

I never realized that it happened to me. One day when I was giving a presentation and my head down and I explained my problem. My Desktop was almost cluttered with Excel and Word files icon. He politely asked me to pick it up and I was almost looking there for half an hour but in vain. He explained to me that my problem was that I have not planned or controlled my files properly on my computer and it also reflects the kind of personality I am. . I was really embarrassed by his observation

I decided to declutter my computer immediately and did the following:

I was the first to back up my hard disk to safety, so I do not lose any valuable file that I need to have.

Next I created a folder named Desktop and just blindly pulled all the files on my desktop and dropped it in my new folder. It was really glad to see my desktop so neat and clean. I realized that I was so lazy that I just keep living my files on the desktop and never bothered to register it properly, or scrap it if necessary.

Next I checked the temporary files created under both Windows folder and Internet temporary folder. I never realized that every email attachment I open and close creates a temporary file and it sits permanently until I delete it.

And I searched for files that are not used for more than one year, with advance option in the search panel and I got a long list of files that were never used, but I just kept it on my computer. I scroll just names, and decided that it is no longer necessary. I chose immediately all these files and delete them from your memory. There were countless number of duplicate files that have been created as photographs, many versions of the same file that will never be used by me.

I turned to see what all the programs I’ve been using. More than half of the programs on my Program options were used only once and were never recovered again. I’ve been setting up programs, but never bothered to remove if they no longer need. I went into the settings and my console and remove any unwanted programs from there. There were many games I used to play once upon a time, but were still on my computer. I simply deleted them.

After doing all this cleaning I opened my Recycle Bin and empty it, so I can get a little more space to breathe. I then disk cleanup and defragmentation on my computer. This exercise really did a thorough clean up my computer and restructured or rearranged my files completely. I estimated body defragmenting possibility weekly, so that I can run on its own without the intervention of my people. I decided me henceforth I shall keep records of where they should be, and not leave them on the desktop. I realized going file on the desktop is like going to file on the table.

I was surprised to see how much space I had gained by simply making these measures and also my system had begun to work faster.
